Aistear is a curriculum framework for children from birth to six years in Ireland. It is a play based learning programme that delivers curriculum content in a fun and child centred way based on certain themes. It promotes learning and the development of languages and social skills as well as promoting positive values such as turn taking, respect for others and for property. Each daily session lasts approximately 30 minutes and the children work in different designated areas (Socio dramatic, Construction, Small world, Sand/Water, Junk art/ Art, Writing and Computers). Each area is planned and set up in advance by the class teacher. The teacher aims to incorporate activities within these areas that connect with the theme whilst also meeting curriculum needs. Children work alongside peers in designated groups working together or as individuals exploring and using the resources available to them at that station. They experience each area once per week. We have been changing theme very fortnight to link with the themes being explored in English. To date we have covered the themes of ‘Dinner Time’, ‘ The School Office’, ‘The Witches Den’, ‘The Hospital’ and ‘The Café’. Examples of areas and activities include; Construction eg Building a hospital/ building tables and chairs for the café Sensory eg water play, sand tables, playdough Socio dramatic/ Role Play- an area is set up under each theme for role play eg. The examination room in the hospital. The children take on different roles, acting and communicating using new language learned based on that theme. Small World- eg using small toys, mats, doll houses etc to re-enact scenes from a familiar story Writing- eg writing getting well soon cards Computers for phonics games eg starfall/phonics bloom At the end of the fortnight we review each station, chatting about what the children’s liked/did not like and they get to choose a station of choice to play in. Even though we couldn’t engage in some of our usual Science Week activities, we were able to take part in some very interesting online workshops and Zoom demonstrations, as well as participating in some fun in-class activities and experiments. Junior and Senior Infants We learned about DNA and fingerprints at the Junior Einstein Online workshop. We watched the ‘Up in Smoke’ demonstration with Professor Baloney during the Cork Science Festival. We observed the reaction of different materials to moisture and heat during our skittles experiment. On Thursday, we asked ‘What’s the Story with Johnny Magory?’ during the online workshop with author Emma Jane Leeson. On Friday, we conducted our dancing raisins experiment and observed the effects of Co2 in liquids. 1st and 2nd On Monday we focused on sound energy and were treated to a wonderful online music demonstration of Baroque music and interactive lesson by Ensemble Dagda. We watched a Zoom science show “Up in Smoke with Professor Baloney”. We learned about different gases. It was a lot of fun! The next day we discovered how Carbon Dioxide in fizzy water made raisins dance. We made rainbows using Skittles and got to eat the leftover Skittles. We were VERY excited about that. Our teacher reckoned that she should have given us the leftover raisins instead! 3rd/4th Class On Monday we went back in time and learned about prehistoric creatures in Australia during Dinos Down under, a live interactive zoom class organised by the Cork Science Festival. On Wednesday we learned about electrical circuits and built a working vacuum cleaner, motor car, wind powered car and a robot dog. On Thursday we learned about the digestive system and participated in a pretty graphic demonstration of what happens to the food we eat. On Friday we learned about how forensic science is used to solve crimes during the Junior Einstein Online Workshop. 5th/6th class We took part in some fun experiments involving gravity and discovered how we can find our balancing points.
